Developing sustainable livelihoods
The My City, My World New Media Workshops have initiated an exploration into the potential contribution that enterprise and entrepreneurship can make in improving the livelihoods of youth in urban communities.
Increasing numbers of young people are faced with sustaining livelihoods under very difficult conditions. We are interested in how enterprise approaches may be used to sustain the livelihoods of youth in these circumstances.
By "enterprise" we mean that set of skills, attitudes and behaviors that allow a person to adapt to changing circumstances by taking control and initiative. Examples of enterprise attributes include self-determination, focused decision-making, creativity, negotiation, conflict resolution, risk management, initiative, strategic planning and marketing. When these attributes are applied to business formation and expansion we call this "entrepreneurship" whereas enterprise skills may be applied to a wide variety of other life circumstances including coping with poverty.
Through the effective application of computer technologies in the creation, production and sharing of artistic expression, these workshops have the potential to engage young people in ways that open up new modes of learning. New media technologies are connected to the field of education and learning, but also to economic growth and business .
The My City, My World New Media Workshops provide positive learning experiences for low income and at-risk youth in Marion County by developing visual literacy skills through photography and multimedia workshops. Our aim is to focus on each student’s ability to create and to encourage them in dealing with some of life’s obstacles through the power of photography, and computer technology.
The goals of the New Media Workshops are to provide positive learning experiences for youth who may not otherwise be exposed to such a program. Our programs mentor young people in the art of photography and new media while fostering a sense of pride in their ability to learn new skills that enhance their potential for developing a sustainable livelihood.
The My City, My World New Media Workshops will provide courses in photography, the applications of computer hardware and software in the processing of their images (both film & digital) as well as the use of state of the art printers to produce their images.
In the photography workshops students will be exposed to a wide range of camera types and the function that they serve. Participants will learn progressive degrees of camera operation, composition and exposure. In addition students will learn to effectively utilize the elements and principles of design in communicating their photographic statement.
In the computer labs they will be trained in the technologies common to digital image processing, as well as, basic website development. There are sessions covering the basics of Adobe Photoshop image editing software that will explore the endless opportunities for photographic enhancement and artistic expression. Also in the computer lab, students will gain knowledge of digital printing processes as they output their images using high-resolution printers.
Participants create web pages containing images of their art with a brief statement about their work.
